Avon Park is located in the heart of central Florida's Citrus Country and agriculture, citrus and livestock production is a major contributor to its economy. Avon Park is proud of its numerous pristine lakes, championship golf courses, and its crowned jewel, "The Downtown Mile-Long Mall." This is an antique district that attracts privately owned boutiques, diners and craft stalls and sets the tone for Avon Park's unique retail base. Enclosed modern shopping malls, Lakeshore Mall to the south and Eagle Ridge Mall to the north, and accompanying strip centers complete shoppers' needs. "Spring-time on the Mall" is Arts & Crafts Festival held at the end of March. Locals also call Avon Park the "The City of Champions," to honor the high school as the first in the state to win both baseball and football state championships in the same year.

The City of Avon Park was founded in1886 after Connecticut native, Oliver Martin Crosby first settled in the area in 1884. He came to study and write about swamps and their snake, alligator and mosquito companions. Other Americans searching for a quiet retreat followed and an English native suggested the name "Avon" since it reminded her of Stratford-on-Avon. Avon Park was incorporated as a town in 1913 and gained city status in 1925. Today, this 4.6 square miles city is home for 9000 residents, a young multicultural population that enjoys the many employment and recreational opportunities in the community. Avon Park is a family town with family values reflected in schools; youth sports activities, churches, and homes. More than 40 churches covering a wide range of denominations serve the community and citizens here practice what they preach. There are over 30 service and civic organizations that thrive with volunteer support.

There is no excuse to go hungry in Avon Park. Good eating takes on a new flavor as nationally recognized names vie with entrepreneurial ventures to satisfy your stomach's rumblings. Classic American grille, seafood, Mexican,Chinese, Italian, pizza, fast-food you won't want to skip a meal, or dessert opportunity. There are plenty of opportunities for exercise as the mean annual temperature registers a comfortable 75.5 degrees. Avon Park is a feast of activity for outdoor lovers. The Air Force has opened 80,000 acres of its 110,000-acre bombing range to the public. Here, 32 miles of hiking/nature trails beckon, with turkey, wild hogs, quail, deer, alligators and armadillo darting across explorers paths. Highlands Hammock State Park houses its share of fascinating wildlife. The theme is family recreation, with an off-road bike trail, Cypress " Catwalk," and an 11 mile horse trail, all of which provide visitors several ways to view wildlife in its natural habitat.

Avon Park area supports more than 30 lakes, so wonderful fishing opportunities abound for the patient. Boating opportunities beckon those who enjoy captaining canoes to speedboats. Tennis courts, racquetball courts and skateboard ramps dot the landscape for those on the go, as do 11 golf courses for those who like a bit more challenge on their walk! In addition to the public schools, there are two private schools – Walker Memorial Jr. Academy and Community Christian Academy. Further education can be completed at South Florida Community College, a fully accredited two-year public community college.
