Jasper is the seat of government of Hamilton County and is proud of its history and heritage. This two square mile town with a population of two thousand has an equal percentage of white and African American people. The level of education is below state average and so is the income, but it is a safe city with a low crime rate. Has this to do with the fact that the historic old jail of Hamilton County used to be here? Hamilton County in North Florida has a nickname of the peninsula within a peninsula because it has the Suwannee River to the east and south, the Withlacoochee to the west.

There are practically no recent immigrants in Jasper and most of the residents have lived here all their life. They obviously love the simple life that was the lifestyle of original Florida and are proud to preserve it. Though there is some agriculture most of the local employment is non-farming. Most people are employed within Jasper though the rate of unemployment is higher than average. Hunting at the Piney Top Hunting Preserve is an attraction.

The children study at the Hamilton County High School and the local primary and secondary schools. The congregation prays at the local Bible Baptist Church. The Trinity Community Hospital looks after the medical needs of the residents and others from Hamilton County. The city is proud of its sports stars; Jasper is the birthplace of Alex Brown the 2005 NFL player for the Chicago Bears. NBA player for the Dallas Mavericks, Marquis Daniels was also born here.

The Hamilton County Chamber of Commerce applied for and won the designation of the first countywide Main Street USA in Florida and probably the nation. Local recreation facilities include five baseball fields, two tennis courts, three soccer fields, two handball courts, and the rodeo arena in Jasper. Gibson Park, on the banks of the Suwannee River, offers rustic camping fishing and canoeing. The Heritage Village houses memorabilia of the past and life in the south in the disused cotton gin

Another local attraction is the Historic Museum at the Old Jail, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1893 this two-story fireproof brick, steel and concrete structure was also home to the Sheriff and his family. Photographs of the last legal hanging East of the Mississippi are on display. This was Hamilton County's only jail, in use 1984. The Old Jail gives visitors an opportunity to walk through the area where Hamilton County housed and hanged its prisoners.

New stores are opening in Jasper. Rings and Things is a full-service jewelry store that offers in-house and catalog showroom sales to meet the demands of the community in terms of choice and budget. The staff help customers with jewelry education, consulting and free layaway. The store also sells computers, custom designed systems for students, game enthusiasts and small business operations. The Days Inn Jasper is a newly renovated property with a picnic area on the site for the whole family to enjoy.
