Macclenny in the Jacksonville metro area is the county seat of Baker County which is one of Florida’s First Coast counties located in Northeast Florida. It is thirty mile west of Jacksonville on the Atlantic Ocean and only a short distance from the Jacksonville beaches. The county seat since 1886, the town was incorporated in 1887. Macclenny was originally named Darbyville. In 1890 the name was changed to McClenny, after a big timber salesman. The spelling was probably changed to Macclenny, as it is known today because post office regulations forbade the use of a capital letter in the middle of the name of a town. Macclenny had an exciting Old West type background and was full of vigor. At the beginning of the 20th century, the main businesses were raising cattle, turpentine, forestry and agriculture.

Today with a population just over five thousand, Macclenny serves as a bedroom community for Jacksonville though there are several employment opportunities with the city as well. Baker County is considered a rural area but it has many of the features and opportunities offered in larger urban areas. Macclenny boasts of small town atmosphere with big city convenience. It is a thriving and progressive region with an excellent school system, updated medical services and an abundance of recreational facilities. The schools have facilities for art, music and physical education as well as media specialists and career guidance counselors. There are a number of churches representing almost all denominations for the local congregation and there is an industrial park near the city.

Macclenny Products, a textile distributor, located in the City of Macclenny is a local employer. Enterprise East, an industrial park on US 90 offers water and water treatment facilities from the city. Wal-Mart’s Food Distribution Center with approximately 600 employees, is located in Enterprise East. Agriculture and forestry has always been a significant contributor to the local economy. The ornamental horticulture industry is also a major industry and the region has some of Florida’s oldest and largest wholesale nurseries, especially for woody ornamentals. Nursery stock is shipped nationwide from here.

Pineview Golf and Country Club is an excellent eighteen hole public golf course located in Macclenny. The city parks have tennis courts and ball fields and the local YMCA, school system, and churches offer a variety of sports and culture programs in the community. A branch of Lake City Community College is located in Macclenny. It offers community and adult educational programs. There are a number of modern hospitals located in Macclenny. Ed Fraser Memorial Hospital, a state-of-the-art facility. The Baker County Health Department and a community mental health clinic are also here. North East Florida State Hospital wit over 500 beds serves patients from the north Florida region. The Frank Wells Nursing Home, maintained by the county, and Macclenny Nursing and Rehab Center, a privately owned center, provide care for over 180 patients.
