Milton in Santa Rosa County, in the Pensacola-Ferry Pass metro area is popularly known as the Canoe Capital of Florida. This historic city was incorporated 1844 and is the county seat of Santa Rosa County. This former trading post on the Blackwater River that bisects the town, offers numerous facilities for adventures on the river. The name of the community may be in honor of settler Milton Amos or Governor John Milton or it may be a shortened spelling of Milltown. An early nickname for Milton was Scratch Ankle for the briars on the riverbanks that visitors had to battle. In the nineteenth century, Milton had three sawmills running 99 saws. Timber trading was obviously a major occupation then, but today Milton has been awarded the Tree City U.S.A. citation! Legend has it that in the early years Milton boasted of three confectionaries, one known as 'Shades,' where locals gathered at 11 a.m. to enjoy ice juleps!

Milton is home to over 8 thousand multicultural people. Its charming redbrick historic downtown, small town appeal and the sugar white beaches and meandering currents of the Blackwater River attract many visitors throughout the year. Water sports lovers will experience canoeing unlike anywhere in the world. The spring fed river flows at an average depth of two feet over a soft, sandy bottom through a state forest. White sand beaches dot the banks and are perfect for swimming, sunning and picnicking. The downtown area is a Main Street Florida designated area and boasts of many attractive edifices. Santa Rosa County Courthouse is also located in the Historic Downtown Milton.

Milton offers a wide variety of houses from affordable to luxury, waterfront, secluded or suburban. There are a number of good private and public schools. The Pensacola Junior College-Milton Campus is conveniently located and has beautiful wooded surroundings. The University of Florida also has a branch campus at the PJC Milton Campus. The local churches of many include the Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian. The medical needs of the community are looked after by the West Florida Community Care Center and the Santa Rosa Medical Center with its 24-hr Emergency Room, Critical Care Unit, and surgical facilities.

Milton is best known for its annual Scratch Ankle Festival a street fair with fun for everyone. A popular local restaurant that offers a generous country-style buffet is Grandma’s Restaurant. The fried chicken and ribs are about the best around and Grandma’s tries to keep the feel of the Old South with traditional dishes and Southern charm. There are numerous hotels in the area including the excellent Holiday Inn Express, Red Roof Inn, and Comfort Inn.
