Just over a thousand people in Orange County, Florida call Oakland their home. Oakland is approximately twenty minutes away from Orlando and all the attractions of the area. In fact, it enjoys a small town atmosphere with all the conveniences of large metropolis at hand. The population of the city has increased significantly in the nineties, by over a third of the current population.

However, there is no significant industry or commerce in Oakland the percentage of unemployed people is significantly below state average. The orange groves provide employment. The number of African American people living here is also significantly above state average. The Hispanic race population however is below state average.

There are a number of churches in this sparsely populated town so residents and visitors have a choice of praying at a church of the denomination of their faith. These include the Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, the First Baptist Church of Oakland, and the Oakland Presbyterian Church. The numerous activities of the churches contribute to a strong sense of community particularly for the children. Oakland is a safe haven with hardly any incidence of crime.

A large number of the residents have young children and the local school, the Oakland Avenue Charter School runs classes from primary or kindergarten level to class five since 2000. It runs an Early Success program for second-graders. The school has a good reputation, provides quality all round grounding, and contributes significantly to the all round development and grooming of their young pupils.

The local economy is also dependant on the nearby tourist’s attractions. It is always a great idea to find a relatively unexplored nook or small town near a large city with plenty of entertainment to enjoy the entire palette of local experiences. Oakland provides just that. The lakes nearby offer a variety of water sports and the well spread out town is a good place to unwind after all the excitement of the theme parks and the entertainment of Orlando.

The West Orange trails and the Oakland Nature Preserve are great for lovers of outdoor adventures. The preserve has been in existence since 1998 and many changes have been made including a 3-meter boardwalk that winds through wetlands and terminates in a large pavilion overlooking Lake Apopka. The hiking and biking trails run through 95 acres of natural swamps, wetlands, and forests complete with alligators and other wildlife. The historical cabins on the lake add to the picture.

Oaktubb Inn Guesthouse is a four-acre, lakefront estate offering Old Florida hospitality in a restored mansion. The guests are encouraged to feel at home in the living room, dining room, parlor, and the original kitchen. One can relax in the spacious screened porch with rocking chairs, an upstairs television lounge, and the observation balcony with views of the orange groves and Lake Apopka. There is a heated swimming pool is open all year. Winter guests can join the locals and enjoy picking their own oranges in the local orange groves.
