South Bay in Western Palm Beach County is a city of approximately three square miles area and a population of nearly four thousand persons. More than two thirds of the population is of African American origin though there has been a recent increase in Hispanic population, because of fresh influx of people in the1990s from Latin American countries. South Bay is located approximately 45 miles west of West Palm Beach, 75 miles east of Fort Myers and 75 miles northwest of Miami. The community stands on the southeastern shores of Lake Okeechobee. It was actually named South Bay for its location on Lake Okeechobee. The city is located at the crossroads of South Florida where State Highway 80 and U.S. Highway 27 meet. South Bay is served by both, the Florida East Coast Railway Company (FEC) and by the South Central Florida Railroad (SCFRR).

The city has a low average income and the level of unemployment is higher than state average. Traditionally this has been an agricultural area with its rich black soil. The many large lakes in the neighborhood are popular for fishing and the vast waters make South Bay suitable as a recreation destination. With available labor, low taxes, cooperative government, and strong infrastructure, South Bay is poised on a growth curve. The city is well suited for virtually any industry - from distribution to manufacturing to tourism and recreation. The South Bay Park of Commerce is an area designated for the location of new industry and it is hoped that its growth will boost the city’s economy and provide much needed employment to the local population. The Commerce Park is accessible to and can be served by rail, though currently there is no rail spur to the property.

South Bay has maintained its small town appeal and scenic beauty in one of the nation's booming areas. Palm Beach County has shown a continuous increase in population by an average of five percent a year, ranking it as the third fastest growing major metropolitan area in the U.S. over the past twenty five years. Okeechobee Inn is the local hotel. It is a two story modern hotel offering comfortable rooms and a swimming pool.

The city is the location of the South Bay Correctional Facility. This facility was established in 1997 to house adult male inmates and currently more than a thousand persons are lodged there. This is a well maintained privately run correctional facility and provides a number of amenities to the inmates, as a part of its rehabilitation program. In addition to education and substance abuse programs, during which the inmates get a basic academic training, and are helped to wean off alcohol and drugs, the correctional facility offers the inmates a number of vocational training programs. These include building maintenance technology, Business Software Applications, carpentry and cabinetmaking, environmental horticulture nursery operations and Gasoline Engine Service Technology. These courses will go a long way in providing gainful employment to the inmates after their release from the correctional facility.
