Starke in Bradford County is a lovely small town with a host of activities to keep you busy. This County Seat of Bradford it is believed to be named after Gov. Starke Perry; though some believe it was in honor of Thomas Starke, landholder. The city has a population of 6000 people with 30% of African American descent.

Shands At Starke was originally Bradford County Hospital and opened in 1956, providing 25 beds and health care to the rural community. Santa Fe Healthcare purchased it in 1983, and in 1996, Shands HealthCare took it over. The original building was bulldozed and a new hospital built with a 28,000-square-foot addition. Today this not-for-profit hospital has 49 beds and is home to the Bradford Family Medical Group, a primary care center staffed with family practice physicians and specialty clinics for urology, cardiology, gynecology, ophthalmology, surgery, podiatry and hematology/oncology.

Starke has several private and public schools. It is also home to Santa Fe Community College and the Bradford Union Area Vocational Technical Center. Lake Region Community Theatre performing in the historic Jones-Rosenberg Building of the Santa Fe Community College Andrews Center is a popular local community theatre group. It holds entertaining plays throughout the year. Bradford County Historical Museum provides a glimpse into the rich history of the small North Florida County of Bradford with its extensive collection of memorabilia, historical artifacts, and photographs.

Camp Blanding Museum &Memorial Park is dedicated to the Infantry Division, the Florida National Guard, and all who served this nation's 20th Century conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and other conflicts. It features a colorful collection of U.S. and foreign weapons and a refurbished World War II barracks houses mannequins in uniform, contains monuments, displays and photographs.

Starke Country Club is home to a nine hole, semiprivate golf course built in 1950. It features tree-lined fairways and water features on seven of the holes. The Starke Raceway

has the fastest and smoothest paved oval go-kart racetrack in North Florida and offers exciting go-kart racing.

In addition to the local Days Inn and Western Hotels, Starke has a lovely Bed and Breakfast, Hampton Lake B&B. This modified A-frame retreat is on a sixty-acre open field with a large waterfront stretching across a quiet 822-acre cypress lake. There are four individually decorated guest rooms with private baths, and guests can relax on rocking chairs in the spacious back porch. Take a leisurely stroll through the open fields or enjoy a bike ride down country lanes. If you prefer the water, spend your day fishing off the pier or swimming in the lake.

Kingsley Park overlooking the scenic Kingsley Lake is a family oriented RV park on thirty beautiful acres and offers cozy cabins as well. Enjoy beautiful white sandy beaches, a top rated restaurant, and a video arcade game room with pool tables, a convenience store, and bait and tackle shop, laundry facilities, numerous water activities, and live outdoor entertainment. They also offer scuba diving lessons in a 100-foot deep, 2,000-acre spring fed lake. Starke KOA is an award-winning campground that offers all full hookup sites, laundry facilities, exercise equipment, a large dog walk, walking trails, and Sunday church service.
