Scenic beauty, excellent weather, sporting opportunities and excellent educational facilities make Valrico a sought after destination. This is an unincorporated city and as such nearly seven thousand multicultural people live here. The area population is over fifty thousand. Valrico is in Hillsborough County, in the Tampa-Saint Petersburg metro area. The community name means "valley of gold" in Spanish, a name given in the 1880s by William G. Tousey, a professor from Boston. Professor Tousey along with other New Englanders purchased property here in order to build winter homes and perhaps eventually retire here.

The arrival of the railroad in 1890 put Valrico on the map with a depot and a post office. Tousey and colleagues platted streets and encouraged the opening of businesses and retail stores. A bank and a golf course were laid out in its plans. Local clay was used to make bricks and construct the bank building and the large civic building. The latter is still in use today as the home of the Village Players Theatrical Company. The area was rich in citrus groves of which two are still in existence today. The original street arrangement still in use reflects the historic character of the community.

Located just east of Brandon on Valrico Lake, the city of Valrico abounds in natural beauty and is a fairly modern unincorporated city. Residents are warm and friendly and they enjoy the rich quality of life benefits of a small town, while having access to all of the conveniences of a metropolitan area. The area is easily accessible to all parts of Tampa by the Cross-town Expressway, State Road 60, Interstate 4, Interstate 75 and a number of county roads. The area is a favorite with retirees as it has numerous golf courses and other amenities and excellent weather.

Homes in Valrico are usually single family homes though a few condominiums and townhouses are available as well as land lots for custom home building. There are various forms of recreation for all ages, including Little League baseball, several well equipped parks, water activities on the Alafia River and the Gulf of Mexico. Water sports offered locally include fishing, surfing, canoeing and kayaking. One can spend the whole day outdoors enjoying the several nearby nature trails and dozens of golf courses in the area. Area residents and visitors seem to live for golf and the mild winters and endless days of sunshine allow them to enjoy the many attractions of Valrico and its surrounding area. No wonder so many people choose to live and vacation here.

Valrico is in the Hillsborough County school district and has excellent schools. As the area booms more new schools are opening annually. The economy of the region is fuelled by technology, agriculture, the military, the Mac Dill Air Force Base. Valrico is an excellent place to work and live and to visit. Many residents commute to other towns for work as its central location provides them with the simplicity of small town life, while being close to large cities. Whether you are looking for a permanent residence or a vacation home, Valrico has a lot to offer.
