About The Community
It is remarkable that this roughly 16-square-mile city traces its modern beginnings to 1895, when Maj. Nathan S. Boynton helped establish the settlement that would grow into todays Boynton Beach. By 1896, the first colonists had arrived and the Boynton Beach Hotel had been built. In the early 1900s, the areas agricultural economy shipped crops such as tomatoes and pineapples. As the community expanded, the Boynton Methodist Episcopal Church was established in 1905 and Saint John Baptist Church in 1908. Local civic groups also played an important role, and the Boynton Woman’s Club remains part of that legacy.
Early growth brought a school, bank, and a bridge over the East Coast Canal at Ocean Avenue. Boynton incorporated as a town in 1920, and civic services expanded in the years that followed. Hotels, roads, and commercial development helped shape the community, even as hurricanes periodically forced rebuilding. The city adopted the name Boynton Beach in 1941, and later growth created the broader residential and business landscape visitors see today.
