Tampa is one of Florida’s largest cities, and the surrounding metro area is home to more than three million residents. Following the U.S. acquisition of Florida from Spain in 1821, Fort Brooke was established in 1824 near present-day downtown Tampa. The community grew around the military post and was incorporated as the City of Tampa in 1855. Today, visitors find a busy port city with historic districts, museums, professional sports, and walkable entertainment areas along the waterfront.
In addition to being a leading commercial center, Tampa has a long list of visitor attractions. Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is a 335-acre, African-inspired theme park and zoological destination known for thrill rides, animal habitats, live entertainment, dining, and seasonal events. Signature coasters such as Kumba and Montu remain longtime favorites. Nearby, Busch Gardens’ water park, Adventure Island, offers water slides, pools, relaxing areas, and attractions such as Solar Vortex. Hours and attraction availability may vary by date and season.

The Tampa Convention Center sits on the downtown waterfront along the Tampa Riverwalk and hosts conventions, trade shows, and special events throughout the year. The Florida Aquarium features Florida wetlands, coral reef life, and family-friendly exhibits on Tampa’s Channelside waterfront. By the mid-20th century, many of Ybor City’s cigar factories had closed, but the district was later revitalized and today blends historic buildings with museums, restaurants, nightlife, and local shops. Nearby Channelside and the Channel District offer waterfront dining, entertainment, cruise access, and convenient connections to downtown attractions via the TECO Line Streetcar.

Ybor City is one of Florida’s best-known National Historic Landmark Districts. Cobblestone streets and large cigar factory buildings help preserve the character of the neighborhood founded in 1886 by Vicente Martinez-Ybor. It was once widely known as “the cigar capital of the world.”
The David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts is located in downtown Tampa, and the Glazer Children’s Museum offers hands-on exhibits for families. Tampa is also home to several higher-education institutions, including the University of South Florida, Hillsborough Community College, and the University of Tampa.
