Lake Helen, Florida
Lake Helen is a small lakeside city in Volusia County, part of the Deltona–Daytona Beach–Ormond Beach metro area. Set between Orlando and Daytona Beach, and near DeLand, it offers a quieter base for travelers who want easy access to beaches, springs, fishing lakes, and Central Florida day trips. Lake Helen is best known for its relaxed pace, historic character, and proximity to nearby attractions rather than for big-city crowds.

About The Community
Settlement in the Lake Helen area grew in the late 19th century. Henry A. DeLand, founder of the nearby city of DeLand and the academy that later became Stetson University, helped promote development here, and the community was named for his daughter Helen. Today Lake Helen remains a small city of roughly 3,000 residents, valued for its historic district, residential charm, and convenient location near DeLand, Deltona, Orange City, and the Atlantic coast.

Lake Helen also has a place in Florida business history: early Nautilus exercise equipment was developed and manufactured here. While the city is largely residential today, visitors still come for its historic buildings, nearby equestrian areas, scenic drives, and access to outdoor recreation throughout west Volusia County.

Just southeast of Lake Helen is the historic Cassadaga area, home to the Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp Meeting Association. Visitors come for the distinctive cottages, the historic hotel, book and gift shops, walking tours, and private readings or healing services, which may be available by appointment or on a changing schedule.

Founded in 1894 by George P. Colby, Cassadaga is widely known as “The Psychic Center of the World.” The name Cassadaga is commonly translated as “rocks beneath the water.” Listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places, it remains one of Central Florida’s most unusual and memorable stops for travelers interested in spiritual history, architecture, and local lore.

Additional Details
Lake Helen is a good fit for visitors who enjoy small-town scenery, historic architecture, and easy drives to bigger attractions. Within a short drive you can reach downtown DeLand, Blue Spring State Park, DeLeon Springs State Park, and the beaches. Dining, shopping, and lodging choices inside Lake Helen itself are limited, so many travelers also use nearby DeLand, Orange City, Deltona, or Daytona Beach for additional services.

If you are planning an overnight stay, confirm accommodations directly before you go, as small inns and bed-and-breakfast availability can change. For many visitors, Lake Helen works best as a peaceful base for exploring west Volusia County while enjoying a slower pace away from busier resort corridors.
