About The Community
Plant City is in the northeastern part of Hillsborough County in the heart of Central Florida. The city was incorporated in 1885 and today covers roughly 29 square miles. Its character still reflects a mix of railroad history, agriculture, and small-town traditions.
Plant City’s earliest known name was Ichepucksassa, after a Native village associated with the area. It was later called Cork, reportedly named by an Irish postmaster after his home city in Ireland. In 1884, Henry B. Plant extended the South Florida Railroad to the community, and when the town was incorporated in 1885 it was renamed in his honor as Plant City. Despite the common assumption, the city’s name comes from Henry Plant rather than from the surrounding farmland.
