Belle Glade, Florida
Belle Glade is a historic agricultural city in western Palm Beach County, near the southern shore of Lake Okeechobee in Florida’s Glades region. The community was originally known as Hillsboro; the name was later changed to Belle Glade, reflecting the idea that the settlement was “the Belle of the Glades.”

The Hillsboro Community Council was formed in 1919 and served as the town’s governing body until Belle Glade was incorporated in 1928. What began as a small settlement grew into one of the largest communities in the Lake Okeechobee area, with a diverse population and deep agricultural roots.
About The Community
Indigenous peoples lived in the Belle Glade and Lake Okeechobee region long before modern settlement. Archaeological work in the 20th century documented important prehistoric habitation and burial mounds west of Belle Glade. Researchers used the name “Okeechobeeland,” meaning Land of Big Water, for the broader lake region. Archaeologists from the Florida State Museum in Gainesville also studied nearby mound sites.

Lake Okeechobee is the largest freshwater lake in Florida and one of the defining features of the region. Belle Glade’s location near the lake gives the city a distinctive mix of rural landscapes, working farmland, and access to fishing, birding, and scenic drives. The city is reached mainly by U.S. 27 and U.S. 441, making it a practical base for exploring the Glades communities along the south shore of the lake. Agriculture remains central to the local economy, with sugarcane, sweet corn, sod, and winter vegetables among the area’s best-known crops.
