Brooksville, Florida
Brooksville is the county seat of Hernando County in the Tampa–St. Petersburg-Clearwater region of west-central Florida. About 45 miles north of Tampa and inland from the Gulf, the city is known for rolling hills, historic neighborhoods, and a downtown that retains a distinct Old Florida character.

The Brooksville area has a long history that includes Native peoples, Spanish-era exploration, frontier settlement, and Civil War-era activity. One of the early settlements in the area was known as Melendez, and settlers began establishing homes here in the mid-19th century. During Florida’s early county reorganization, Melendez served as the seat of Benton County, the former name of Hernando County.
About The Community
Fort De Soto, a military post established in 1840 during the Second Seminole War, stood near present-day Croom Road on the northeastern side of what is now Brooksville. Difficult access to water contributed to its short life, and nearby settlement patterns shifted over time. Communities known as Pierceville and Melendez later developed in the area; their consolidation in 1856 led to the community that became Brooksville, which was incorporated in 1880.

Brooksville was named for Representative Preston Brooks of South Carolina, and the name was formalized when the local post office was designated Brooksville in 1871. Today, the city operates under a council-manager form of government and remains a small but important regional center with historic neighborhoods, local businesses, and civic institutions.
