Dania Beach, Florida
Dania Beach is a coastal city in Broward County, just south of Fort Lauderdale and close to Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The community was incorporated in 1904 as Modello, making it one of the oldest municipalities in South Florida. It was renamed Dania in 1905 to honor Danish settlers who helped establish the area, and it later adopted the name Dania Beach to emphasize its Atlantic shoreline. Like many South Florida communities, it endured major storm damage in the 1920s and rebuilt over time into a city known for its beach, pier, marine businesses, and distinctive local character.

Agriculture was once an important part of the local economy, with tomato farming among the better-known industries in the early 20th century. Rail connections helped growers move produce across the state and beyond, but changes in land use, soil conditions, and development gradually shifted Dania Beach toward marine trade, tourism, retail, and service industries.

About the Community
Dania Beach developed a long-running reputation for antiques, collectibles, and browsing-friendly shopping districts, and that identity still shapes the city today. Visitors will also find long-standing local favorites such as Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlour & Restaurant, along with newer dining, retail, and entertainment options in the area. Rather than feeling like a resort strip, Dania Beach blends everyday South Florida neighborhoods with pockets of historic character, waterfront industry, and convenient visitor amenities.

Dania Beach offers several city parks, a well-known fishing pier, and straightforward access to the beach. Popular outdoor activities include swimming, surf fishing, walking the shoreline, paddle sports in the wider area, and family outings in neighborhood parks such as Frank C. “Tootie” Adler Park and Dania Beach Ocean Park. The nearby Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park is one of the area’s standout natural attractions, with coastal habitat, paddling access, and scenic views between the Intracoastal waterways and the Atlantic Ocean. Beach conditions, park hours, and fishing access may vary by date and weather.

Marine trade remains a major part of the local economy. Dania Beach is closely tied to boating, yacht services, repair work, storage, and other waterfront businesses connected to the Port Everglades area and nearby waterways. For visitors, that working-waterfront character adds to the city’s appeal, especially if you enjoy fishing culture, marinas, tackle shops, and easy access to South Florida’s coastal routes.

Dania Beach is conveniently close to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), making it a practical place to stay for a wider Broward County trip. Visitors can choose from beach-adjacent lodging, familiar hotel brands, and plenty of dining options ranging from casual seafood spots to long-established local favorites. Offshore casino cruises and other specialty excursions have operated from the area at times, but schedules and availability may change.
