Gulfport, Florida
Gulfport, in southern Pinellas County, feels refreshingly distinct from its larger neighbors. The compact waterfront district around Beach Boulevard South and Shore Boulevard South is lined with mature trees, colorful storefronts, galleries, cafés, and historic buildings that give the city much of its old-Florida character.

About The Community
Set on Boca Ciega Bay beside the southwestern edge of St. Petersburg, Gulfport is a small bayfront city with a strong arts community and an easygoing, walkable downtown. While it fronts the bay rather than the open Gulf, it remains a convenient base for visitors who want local character close to St. Pete, nearby beaches, and other Pinellas County attractions.

The community changed names several times in its early years, including Disston City, Bonafacio, and Veteran City, before being incorporated as Gulfport in 1910. A trolley connection to St. Petersburg, a long pier into Boca Ciega Bay, and the waterfront casino pavilion helped establish it as a social destination in the early 1900s and became part of the city’s identity.

Additional Details

Gulfport Casino Ballroom has long been one of the city’s signature landmarks. The original waterfront casino was much more than a dance hall; it served as a gathering place for community meetings, celebrations, and social events. The present ballroom continues that tradition as a city venue for dances, weddings, classes, and special events. Nearby historic sites include the Gulfport History Museum and the former Bay View Hotel/Cedars building.

Another prominent cultural venue is the Catherine A. Hickman Theater, an intimate performance space that regularly hosts plays, music, and community events. Visitors today are often drawn to Gulfport for its walkable arts-and-dining district, waterfront views, small inns and guest accommodations, and relaxed local feel. Time permitting, stroll the waterfront near Gulfport Beach and the city pier at sunrise or sunset, browse the galleries and shops along Beach Boulevard South, and check current city or district calendars for seasonal markets, art walks, and performances. Wildlife sightings in the bay are possible but never guaranteed, and hours, schedules, and availability may change.
