Lake Alfred, Florida
Lake Alfred has had numerous name changes over the years that are entwined with its rich and colorful history. The area was associated with Fort Cummings, a military outpost established in the United States Territory of Florida in 1839 during the territorial era. Local history also connects the site with the 1840 surrender of Seminole leader “Wild Cat” near the close of the Second Seminole War. In the years that followed, the community gradually evolved from frontier outpost to transportation stop and agricultural town.

About The Community
The community took on new importance in 1887 when the railroad linked Sanford and Tampa. A lumber mill and turpentine still operated here under the Lake Alfred Lumber Company, and Armenian workers logged the area when it was known as New Armenia. The settlement was also known at different times as Wahnetta, Bartow Junction, and Chubb. After 1907, citrus helped drive local growth as families including J.C. Cox’s established groves in the area. The city incorporated as Fargo in 1913 before officially becoming Lake Alfred in 1915, named for the lake.

Today Lake Alfred has a population of roughly 5,700. This six square mile city in Polk County is proud to be safe and family oriented. Citrus growing is still a major contributor to the local economy, while research, manufacturing, and distribution also play important roles. Historic rail connections helped tie the area into routes serving major East Coast markets, and Lake Alfred’s position between the major markets of Tampa and Orlando continues to make it a convenient base for exploring the region.
