Lauderdale Lakes is a centrally located city in Broward County, covering about four square miles near State Road 7 (U.S. 441) and Oakland Park Boulevard. Incorporated in 1961 and named after nearby Fort Lauderdale, the city has grown from a small mid-century community into a diverse residential and business center with convenient access to greater Fort Lauderdale and surrounding Broward communities.

In the early 1960s, Lauderdale Lakes was still a lightly developed area with only a few hundred residents, and the landscape looked very different from today. Much of the land was used for farming and grazing, while State Road 7 and Oakland Park Boulevard were far less built up than they are now. Local history notes that cattle and horses sometimes wandered along these roads in those early years. As Broward County expanded, Lauderdale Lakes benefited from its strategic central location and gradually evolved into an established city with neighborhoods, businesses, civic facilities, and community services.
Through the 1960s and 1970s, the city grew along with the rest of Broward County into a vibrant community with a culturally diverse population, economic activity, and neighborhoods surrounded by lakes. As development continued farther west across the county, Lauderdale Lakes became not only centrally positioned, but also increasingly convenient for residents, businesses, and visitors traveling throughout South Florida.

In March 1998, residents voted to change from a Mayor/City Council system to a Mayor/City Commission/City Manager form of government. The city continues to use the motto “We Care.”
