Niceville, Florida
Niceville is a friendly waterfront community in Okaloosa County, set along Boggy Bayou and Choctawhatchee Bay in Florida’s northwest Panhandle. In addition to its bayside setting, the area is dotted with creeks, lakes, and pine woods, giving visitors easy access to boating, fishing, paddling, and nature trails. With a generally mild climate and plenty of sunshine through much of the year, Niceville makes a relaxed base for exploring this part of the Emerald Coast.

About The Community
Water has shaped life in Niceville from the beginning. Long before the modern city took shape, Native American communities and later settlers depended on the surrounding bays, bayous, and creeks for food, travel, and trade. Fishing, especially for mullet in the sandy-bottomed waters of the area, was a major part of the local economy. The bayou-side settlement that grew here was originally known as Boggy, a name tied to peat deposits near the mouth of Juniper Creek.

By the early 20th century, Boggy was a typical North Florida settlement with a gristmill, sawmill, general store, and boat yard. Water transportation and affordable land helped draw new residents to the area after the Civil War. Boggy officially became Niceville in 1910 after residents adopted a new name for the post office. Nearby Valparaiso later developed as its own community, and the two cities remain closely linked today.
