Plantation sits in central Broward County, just west of Fort Lauderdale, and has grown from an agricultural community into a well-established South Florida city. Home to more than 90,000 residents, Plantation offers convenient access to beaches, shopping, parks, and major highways while retaining a leafy, neighborhood-oriented character.
About The Community
Plantation’s modern history is closely tied to Frederick C. Peters, a Missouri native who moved to South Florida and began assembling land here in the early 1940s. Much of the area had been opened for farming through early 20th-century drainage and land-improvement projects, making it suitable for crops and ranching. The city’s name reflected the large agricultural tracts planned for the area, and the Peters family became associated with “Plantation Pride”, a sorghum variety developed for livestock feed.

Peters sold one-acre homesites, often encouraging gardens and fruit trees, and laid out a master-planned community. The city incorporated in 1953 with fewer than 500 residents. Since then, Plantation has expanded into a mature city known for tree-lined streets, civic amenities, and a strong local economy, along with easy access to the wider Fort Lauderdale area.

Plantation Preserve Golf Course & Club is one of the city’s notable public amenities, and local green spaces provide room for walking, picnicking, and family activities. Broward County Transit serves the area, and local transportation options, routes, and schedules may change by date.
The Plantation Historical Museum began as a small display space in City Hall and later expanded beside the library. Today, the museum and nearby Botanical Gardens Park help tell the city’s story through exhibits on early settlement, public safety, local families, and Native peoples including the Seminole and Tequesta. Hours and exhibit availability may vary.
Plantation offers a solid mix of shopping and dining, from neighborhood plazas to larger retail centers. The Fountains and Broward Mall remain popular stops, while the Sawgrass area adds even more options nearby.
