Treasure Island is home to roughly 6,000 to 7,000 residents year-round, with visitation rising during peak travel seasons. Much of the island remained undeveloped until the early 20th century. In 1908, Thomas F. Pierce became an early landowner after purchasing property from the State of Florida. The first hotel opened in 1915, and Treasure Island gradually grew as a resort destination. Construction of the Treasure Island Causeway in 1939 helped spur additional residential growth. Several neighborhoods, including Isle of Capri, Isle of Palms, and Paradise Island, were later created through dredge-and-fill development along Boca Ciega Bay.
