The City of Melbourne sits on Florida’s east-central Space Coast in southern Brevard County. It is roughly an hour south of the Kennedy Space Center and about 90 minutes from Walt Disney World Resort, depending on traffic. Melbourne can make an excellent home base for visitors who want easy access to major attractions while also enjoying nearby Atlantic beaches, the Indian River Lagoon, local dining, arts districts, and a more relaxed Space Coast atmosphere.

Melbourne is located primarily on the Florida mainland, with a smaller portion extending across the Indian River Lagoon onto the barrier island. That narrow island helps separate the Lagoon from the Atlantic Ocean, with only a limited number of inlets connecting the two bodies of water. One of the best-known is Sebastian Inlet, farther south in Brevard County. The mainland side of Melbourne is linked across the lagoon to nearby beach communities by the Melbourne Causeway and the Eau Gallie Causeway.
In 1969, the communities of Melbourne and Eau Gallie merged to form today’s City of Melbourne. The city covers roughly 38 square miles and is home to a growing population of more than 80,000 residents. In addition to city services for local neighborhoods and businesses, Melbourne’s utilities play an important regional role by providing drinking water service to several nearby communities.

Historic Downtown Melbourne and the Eau Gallie Arts District (EGAD) feature local shops, galleries, murals, restaurants, and regular community events throughout the year. The Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts hosts concerts, comedy, touring productions, and other performances, with programming and availability varying by date.
