About the Community
Cocoa traces its roots to the 1860s, when families from the North settled in the area along the Indian River. Initially known as Indian River City, the town adopted the name Cocoa in 1884, though the origin of that name is still debated. Cocoa was incorporated in 1895, and much of its historic appeal remains visible today in Cocoa Village, where visitors can stroll shaded streets lined with buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Cocoa also serves as an education and civic center for North Brevard, with public and private schools and Eastern Florida State College’s Cocoa campus nearby.
