Miami Lakes is a master-planned town in northwestern Miami-Dade County, Florida, known for its tree-lined streets, numerous lakes, neighborhood parks, and distinctive Town Center. Located northwest of Miami and near several of the region’s major highways, the community combines a suburban residential setting with restaurants, shops, offices, recreation, and convenient access to destinations throughout South Florida.
Miami Lakes has approximately 33,000 residents and covers about 6.5 square miles. Although the town did not officially incorporate until 2000, its development dates to the early 1960s, when the Graham family began transforming former dairy farmland into a carefully designed community. Today, Miami Lakes is surrounded by communities including Hialeah, Hialeah Gardens, and other parts of northern Miami-Dade County.
About the Community
Miami Lakes was conceived as a master-planned community rather than developing around a traditional downtown or historic settlement. The Graham family commissioned landscape architect Lester Collins, a former dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, to create a plan integrating residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, offices, parks, lakes, and other uses. The original development encompassed approximately 3,000 acres, with the community’s grand opening taking place in 1962.
The original plan helped establish many of the characteristics still associated with Miami Lakes, including winding residential streets, cul-de-sacs, extensive landscaping, neighborhood green spaces, and lakes incorporated throughout the community. The town reports that Miami Lakes contains 23 lakes, while its parks system includes more than 100 parks and green spaces within its relatively compact boundaries.
Main Street and the surrounding Town Center form one of the community’s most recognizable areas. Restaurants, shops, offices, residences, and gathering spaces are concentrated around the pedestrian-friendly district, which also serves as a setting for community celebrations, festivals, markets, and other events held throughout the year.
Outdoor recreation is an important part of Miami Lakes. Miami Lakes Optimist Park provides athletic fields, basketball and tennis courts, a lighted walking path, batting cages, picnic facilities, and other recreational amenities. Royal Oaks Park, Veterans Park, Picnic Park East, K-9 Cove, and numerous neighborhood pocket parks provide additional places for sports, walking, playground activities, gatherings, and everyday recreation.
An unusual feature of the local park system is a collection of passive lakefront parks with small beach areas. The town maintains six of these lakefront spaces in residential areas, adding to the close connection between parks, waterways, and neighborhoods that was established through Miami Lakes’ original community plan.

Miami Lakes occupies a convenient location in northwestern Miami-Dade County near the Palmetto Expressway (State Road 826) and Interstate 75. These major routes provide connections toward Miami, Hialeah, Doral, Broward County, and other destinations throughout South Florida.

Miami Lakes is served by Miami-Dade County Public Schools, with public, charter, and private educational options available in and around the community. The town also maintains youth, adult, senior, athletic, and recreational programs through its Parks and Recreation Department and community facilities.
Law enforcement services in Miami Lakes are provided through a contractual partnership with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office. Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue provides fire protection and emergency medical services, while other county agencies provide regional transportation, library, public works, and additional services.
Miami Lakes also has a substantial commercial and employment base. The town reports more than 1,700 businesses, with offices, professional services, restaurants, retailers, and business parks distributed throughout the community. Main Street and Town Center provide a more concentrated shopping and dining district, while larger commercial and employment areas are located near the town’s major roadways.
For travelers, Miami Lakes provides relatively convenient highway access to both Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Miami International Airport is approximately 10 miles from the community, although actual travel times can vary considerably with South Florida traffic. Having a car is useful for reaching attractions outside Miami Lakes, while local and regional public transportation options are also available.
The town’s character remains closely tied to the master plan developed from the Graham family’s former dairy farm more than six decades ago. Lakes, mature landscaping, winding streets, neighborhood parks, residential areas, businesses, and a central Main Street district give Miami Lakes a noticeably different setting from many surrounding communities while keeping visitors within easy reach of the larger Miami metropolitan area.
