Titusville is widely known as Space City, USA, but it is also one of Florida’s most appealing gateways to riverfront parks, wildlife refuges, and rocket launch viewing. The city sits on the Indian River Lagoon in northern Brevard County, within the Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville metropolitan area, and serves as the county seat. As one of the oldest communities on the lagoon, Titusville combines historic character with easy access to Kennedy Space Center, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, and Canaveral National Seashore.
About The Community
Before Titusville took shape, the settlement was known as Sand Point. Col. Henry T. Titus arrived in 1867, and the Titus family became central to the town’s early development. Mary Titus and her husband established the Titus House hotel, donated land for a courthouse and churches, laid out streets, and helped connect the St. Johns River region with the Indian River by wagon routes. The community adopted the name Titusville in 1873 and was incorporated in 1887.
Titusville became an important shipping point for pineapple and citrus growers, and growth followed with a bank, railroad service, schools, and a local Board of Trade, the forerunner of today’s chamber of commerce. Improved transportation later opened easier routes east toward the barrier island and beaches. Arthur Dunn Airpark dates to 1927, while the former World War II naval fighter field south of town evolved into today’s Space Coast Regional Airport. The city felt the hardships of the Great Depression, but the arrival of the space program transformed Titusville’s regional role in the decades that followed.
